Until recently I'd always used Photoshop's transparency control of layers to partially fade subjects in a global sort of way. Quick and easy but not always yielding the proper effect because of differences in how the background worked with certain areas of the foreground. Now I see the advantage of using the Eraser Tool to translute some areas more than others.
